How to Get Better at Fortnite

Most improvement advice for Fortnite is either "build faster" or a list of pro settings copied without explanation. Neither helps much on its own. What follows is the smaller set of things that reliably move the needle, in rough order of how much difference they make.

Fix your settings before your mechanics

Frame rate matters more than almost anything else you can control. A stable, high frame rate makes aim and building feel responsive in a way no amount of practice compensates for. Lower your graphics settings until the frame rate is steady, not just high on average.

Set your controller or mouse sensitivity so you can consistently turn 180 degrees without overshooting, then leave it alone. Constantly changing sensitivity is the fastest way to never build muscle memory.

Rebind your build and edit keys to something you can reach without moving your hand. If you have to look at the keyboard, the binding is wrong.

Practise deliberately, not just more

Playing more matches is the slowest way to improve, because most of a match is downtime and each death teaches you one lesson at most.

Creative and Reload give you far more repetitions per hour. Reload in particular respawns you, so you fight repeatedly in a real match context rather than in an empty island.

Pick one thing per session — editing one specific piece, taking high ground, third-partying fights — and work on it exclusively. Improving three things at once usually improves none.

Play the position, not the fight

Most eliminations at low and mid skill come from position, not aim. Being above your opponent and between them and the safe zone wins fights you'd lose on mechanics alone.

Rotate early. Moving with the zone rather than being pushed by it means you arrive first, take the high ground and fight on your terms.

Avoid fights you don't need. In a battle royale, surviving to a smaller lobby is worth more than an extra elimination — and the endgame is where the skill you're building actually pays off.

Levelling up quickly

XP comes overwhelmingly from quests rather than from eliminations. Clearing weekly and milestone quests is dramatically faster than grinding matches.

Play the objective modes and finish the daily quests before doing anything else — they refresh regularly and are usually quick.

Be sceptical of "XP glitch" maps promising huge numbers. Epic patches them constantly, and accounts have been actioned for abusing some of them.

Common questions

Do I need to learn to build to be good at Fortnite?

Not necessarily. Zero Build is a full mode with its own ranked ladder, and plenty of strong players only play it. If you play the build modes, though, building is not optional.

Does using a controller or mouse and keyboard matter?

Both are viable at every level. Controller has aim assist, mouse and keyboard has faster building and more precise aim. Pick the one you'll actually practise with.

What's the fastest way to level up the battle pass?

Quests. Weekly and milestone quests award far more XP than eliminations or placement, so clearing them is much faster than simply playing more.
