The Fortnite Battle Pass, Explained
The battle pass is Fortnite's seasonal reward track: you buy it once per season, then unlock cosmetics by playing. It's the main reason people care when a season ends, because unclaimed rewards don't carry over. Here's how the system actually works, and the one detail that makes it cheaper than it looks.
How it works
Each season has its own battle pass with a fixed set of rewards laid out across tiers. You progress by earning XP from playing matches and completing quests, and each tier you pass unlocks the reward attached to it.
There's a free track available to everyone and a paid track that unlocks the bulk of the cosmetics, including the season's headline outfits. Buying the pass retroactively grants everything you've already earned on the paid track, so buying late in a season isn't wasted.
The part that makes it cheap
The paid battle pass returns V-Bucks as you progress through it. Complete enough of the track and you earn back a substantial portion of what you paid — in practice, players who finish the pass each season can fund the next one from those returns.
That mechanic is why the battle pass is generally considered better value than buying individual item shop cosmetics, which return nothing.

What happens when a season ends
Unclaimed battle pass rewards are gone when the season ends. They don't roll into the next pass and they generally don't return to the item shop, which is what makes battle pass exclusives genuinely scarce compared with shop cosmetics that rotate.
Progress doesn't transfer either — the new season starts a fresh pass at tier one.
Epic doesn't publish season end dates far in advance, and dates circulating on other sites are usually inferred from battle pass artwork rather than sourced.
Battle pass versus Fortnite Crew
Fortnite Crew is a monthly subscription that includes the current battle pass, a monthly V-Bucks allowance and an exclusive cosmetic bundle. If you'd buy the pass every season anyway, Crew bundles that with extras for a recurring fee.
The trade-off is straightforward: the battle pass is a one-off purchase per season that partly pays for itself, while Crew is a subscription that keeps charging whether you play that month or not.

Do you keep battle pass skins forever?
Yes, once unlocked. What you don't keep is the chance to unlock the ones you didn't reach before the season ended.
Can you buy the battle pass late in a season?
Yes, and you'll immediately receive every paid-track reward for tiers you've already passed.
Do battle pass skins come back to the item shop?
