How to Play Split Screen on Fortnite
Fortnite supports two players on one console, sharing a screen. It's console-only, it doesn't work in every mode, and the setup has one step people consistently miss — the second player has to join from the lobby, not from a menu option.
Setting it up
Split screen is a console feature. Start Fortnite on PlayStation or Xbox with your own account signed in and get to the lobby.
Turn on a second controller and sign it in to a separate Epic account. Fortnite detects it in the lobby and prompts the second player to join — accept that prompt and the screen splits.
Both accounts need to be signed in to Epic. A guest account without its own Epic login won't work, which is the most common reason the prompt never appears.
Which modes support it
Split screen works in the core Battle Royale and Zero Build modes, in duos and squads. It does not work in solo, for the obvious reason.
Support in other modes — Creative, LEGO Fortnite, Festival, Rocket Racing — varies and has changed over time. If the prompt doesn't appear in a particular mode, that mode most likely doesn't support it.
When it isn't working
Check both controllers are signed in to separate Epic accounts. Two controllers on one account will not split.
Return to the lobby. The join prompt only appears there, not mid-match and not in menus.
Split screen isn't available on PC. If you're on PC and looking for it, the answer is that it doesn't exist there.
