Why Is Fortnite Lagging or Crashing?
Lag and crashes have completely different causes, and the first useful step is working out which category you're in — and whether the problem is even yours. Check the server status first: if Epic is reporting an incident, nothing you change locally will help.
First, rule out Epic
Our server status page reads Epic's own feed directly. If matchmaking or game services are degraded, the lag is server-side and the fix is to wait.
If every service reads operational, the problem is local, and the rest of this guide applies.
Network lag versus frame rate lag
These feel similar and have nothing in common. Network lag looks like other players teleporting, hits not registering, or a rubber-banding character. Frame rate problems look like the whole picture stuttering, including your own menus.
Turn on the in-game network and performance stats. If your frame rate is fine but latency is spiking, it's the connection. If the frame rate itself is dropping, it's the hardware or settings.
For network problems, a wired connection is the single biggest improvement available. Wi-Fi latency fluctuates in ways that wired simply doesn't, and Fortnite is sensitive to that fluctuation.
Improving frame rate
Lower view distance, shadows, effects and post-processing before touching resolution — those cost the most and matter least visually in a competitive context.
Turn off any background applications that capture or overlay the screen. Recording software and browser overlays are a common cause of stutter that people don't attribute to them.
On PC, make sure Fortnite is running on your dedicated graphics card rather than integrated graphics. Laptops in particular default to the wrong one more often than you'd expect.
Fixing crashes
Verify the game files through the Epic Games Launcher. Corrupted files after an interrupted update are the most common crash cause and this fixes it without a reinstall.
Update graphics drivers. Crashes that started after a Fortnite patch are frequently a driver incompatibility rather than a game bug.
Overheating causes crashes that look random but correlate with session length — if it crashes reliably after twenty minutes and not before, check temperatures.
On console, a full power cycle rather than rest mode clears a surprising number of persistent issues.
