What Age Rating Is Fortnite?
Fortnite is rated as suitable for teenagers by the major ratings boards — PEGI 12 in Europe and ESRB Teen in North America. The rating reflects cartoon violence with no blood or gore. For most parents, though, the rating is the least important part: the things worth configuring are spending, chat and screen time.
What the rating covers
The violence is stylised and bloodless. Characters are eliminated and vanish rather than being visibly injured, which is why the rating sits well below that of realistic shooters.
What ratings boards don't cover is the parts parents usually care about most: unmoderated voice chat with strangers, and continuous pressure to spend.
Spending controls
V-Bucks are bought with real money and spent on cosmetics that give no gameplay advantage. The item shop rotates daily and is designed to create urgency, which is worth understanding as a parent even though nothing in it affects whether your child wins.
Epic supports a PIN requirement for purchases through parental controls, and every console platform has its own spending limits and purchase approval settings. Setting both is sensible — they're independent systems.
Gifting is also worth knowing about: players can send cosmetics to friends, which requires 2FA on the sending account.
Voice chat and who your child plays with
Fortnite includes voice chat with squad members, who in random matchmaking are strangers. It can be disabled entirely in the audio settings, or limited to friends only.
Epic's parental controls can also restrict who can add your child as a friend and whether their name is visible to others.
Cabined accounts exist for younger players: Epic restricts certain features until a parent provides consent, which is why some accounts can't use voice chat or make purchases at all.
Setting it up
Epic's parental controls live in the account settings and are protected by a separate PIN from the purchase PIN.
Console-level controls sit alongside them and cover screen time and spending across all games, not just Fortnite.
Both are worth setting. Neither replaces the other, and a child signed in on a different device may only be covered by the account-level ones.
