How to Change Your Fortnite Name
Your Fortnite name is your Epic Games display name, so you change it on your Epic account rather than in the game. The one thing that catches people out is that console players often see a different name entirely — and that's a separate setting.
Changing your display name
Sign in at epicgames.com and open your account settings. On the general account page you'll find your display name with an edit control next to it.
Enter the new name and save. It applies across every platform you play on, because the name belongs to the Epic account rather than to a device.
Names must be unique and pass Epic's filter, so common words and short names are usually taken. If a name is rejected without explanation, it's almost always because it's already in use or has been caught by the profanity filter.
How often can you change it?
Epic limits how frequently display names can be changed — you can't rename yourself repeatedly in quick succession. If the option is greyed out, you've likely changed it recently and need to wait before changing it again.
The exact cooldown is set by Epic and has changed over time, so the account page itself is the reliable place to see when you can next change it.
Why console players see a different name
If you play on PlayStation, Xbox or Switch, other players on your platform may see your platform username rather than your Epic display name. That's controlled by your console account, not by Epic.
To change what those players see, you need to change your PSN online ID, Xbox gamertag or Nintendo account nickname respectively — each of which has its own rules and, in some cases, its own charges.
This is why your name can appear inconsistently to different friends, and it's not a bug.

Does changing your Fortnite name cost anything?
Changing your Epic display name is free. Changing a console platform username may not be — that's governed by Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo rather than Epic.
Do I lose anything by changing my name?
No. Your locker, V-Bucks, stats and friends list all belong to the account, not the name.
Why was my new name rejected?
Almost always because it's already taken or it tripped the profanity filter. Names also have length limits.
